SMALLTOWN / PLANET EARTH by Dada Ra
This is a story in a small town in anywhere planet earth ...................
LATE ONE NIGHT
Once, a long time ago; there was a ladder in the middle of a field, leading straight into the sky. Fading in its height, it seemed to disappear into the clouds. There it stood for some length of time, till one day it was noticed, by one walking by, playing the accordion, as was his way, for his mind was small, or so they say. Everton Enderly was his name, playing the accordion was his fame. Apprentice or mentor, neither was he. Walking about, he plays for the trees, the grass, the moon and the sea. Nightly and daily, those near heard his tune. Pleasant, the sound, nevertheless, never ended too soon. It was on a nightly trek, Everton passed the ladders way. Haze abruptly ending, giving view to the sight. Stopping, nearly dropping his accordion as he swayed, starting from the bottom, slowly gazing to the top, dizziness from angle, merging wonder, did he plop. Upon the ground, eyes rubbed for clarity, it was no dream, the ladder it seems, didn't have a top. Everton Enderly, truly amazed, stumbled to his feet, running into the haze. Upon entrance to the town did he begin to yell at the top of his lungs. "THE LADDER, THE LADDER, THE LADDER, HAS NO TOP! THE LADDER, THE LADDER, THE LADDER, HAS NO TOP! Over and over through town he ran yelling. Important messages were his for the telling. Like the solar eclipse he saw one day, again amazed, this time he ran yelling about the sun losing it's rays…… but I digress. The town, used to Evertons excitements, continued to sleep, barely acknowledging him, even a peep. That is with the exception of nosy Ole' Mae, the centurion of the town whose head never seemed to lay and Evertons best friend, Martin, young athlete of town, out as always, running around. For their own reasons, both stopped their actions - Mae sitting and humming, stopped for a fraction - to know what Everton was yelling about. Both decided, later, they would check the ladder out. Such is the beginning of the events that led to a young boy saving the world.
That is how it all began. I saw the ladder, and did my duty. I spread the news. They say I am not quite right in the head. And in parts of this story, I have to agree; reluctantly; that they were right. Times change as you will see. This recount is to set the record straight. For the sake of accuracy and demanding tantrums, my best friend Martin will help me and Cheryl will put her female perspective in also. They insist there are some parts that only they can tell accurately.,,,,,
